💜 Our Story

The Michael Powell Foundation was born from love, loss, and a deep desire to make a difference.

Our founder, Shanikka Gibson, created this nonprofit in 2025 in honor of her father, Michael S. Powell—a man of strength, wisdom, an Army Veteran with the 101st Airborne Division, a.k.a. Screaming Eagles, and quiet grace—who battled dementia with dignity. Throughout his journey, Shanikka watched her mother lovingly care for him at home, day after day, embodying resilience and devotion. This experience revealed the emotional, financial, and logistical challenges families face when caring for loved ones with cognitive decline. It also illuminated the power of compassion, community, and connection in preserving quality of life.

Every donation, every volunteer hour, and every shared story helps us build a network of care—one that honors the humanity of those living with dementia and uplifts the families who walk beside them.

Michael’s legacy lives on in every act of kindness, every moment of clarity, and every hand extended in support. We invite you to be part of this journey.

Together, we’re proving that love truly is the strongest medicine.

Determined to turn grief into purpose, Shanikka launched the Michael Powell Foundation to support families affected by dementia and Alzheimer’s. Our mission is simple but profound: To help elders aged 62 and older remain in the comfort of their homes, surrounded by love.

We provide:

  • Cognitive tools and comfort items to support memory and independence

  • Weekly support groups for caregivers and families

  • Volunteer outreach and community events that foster joy and connection

  • Resources and education to empower families navigating dementia care
